Highlights of Tuamoto Islands

The 76 atolls of the Tuamotu Archipelago are scattered across the central Pacific Ocean like a brilliant galaxy. Each atoll consists of bracelets of long slender ‘motus’ made of coral sand and rock, enclosing huge lagoons which are protected from the open ocean. Breaches in the reef allow ocean water to enter the lagoon with the incoming tides, flushing its waters and so keeping them pure.

Day 1&2

A short domestic flight from Papeete will land you in the small atoll of Fakarava in just over an hour. Arrive on board your charter yacht anchored in the beautiful island of Fakarava. Beginning at the main village of Rotoava set sail and head to the South Pass for the serene beauty and clear waters which team with fish life and beautiful coral. So pure is the environment here that Fakarava has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for the preservation of rare species. Visiting the ‘pink sands’ of Tetamanu is a short tender ride or stand up paddle board from the anchorage.To the North of the atoll when the weather is right, we visit the beautiful ‘blue lagoon’ which is a lagoon inside the motu. This is a diving and snorkelling paradise. Fakarava is littered with pearl farms and it’s a great opportunity to buy direct from the source.

Day 3 & 4

Toau is a short sail downwind. Inside the lagoon is a marine wilderness hunting for coconut crabs is a great way to spend the day. Another short sail to a sheltered mooring where exploring Manta Rays is a highlight.

Day 5&6

A short morning sail (25 nautical miles) is the South Pass of Apataki. Where the locals cultivate pearls or copra. A great opportunity for surfers here to experience the break.

Day 7

Enjoy the final day from Apataki to Rangiora. See French Polynesia at its best, exploring the far corners of this lagoon which has pink sands in the South, and the bluest lagoons. A short flight awaits to return you to Papeete.
